Every registered domain has a minimum of 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you point your domain address to the servers of a specific web hosting provider. That way, you have both your site and your e-mails managed by the exact same company. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), nevertheless, there is a variety of other records, like A and MX. The former reveals which server manages the website for a given domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the second one indicates which server manages the emails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). For example, when you enter a domain in your Internet browser, your request is forwarded through the global DNS system to the provider whose NS records the domain name uses and from there you may be directed to the servers of another provider provided you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your Internet domain. Having separate records for the website and the emails means you could have your site and your emails with 2 different providers if you'd like.

Custom MX and A Records in Web Hosting

If you have a web hosting account from our company and you want to switch either your website or your emails to a different company, it's going to take you literally only two clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you'll be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default two, it's not going to take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. You may also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a given MX record is going to have. The propagation of every record that you modify or set up is not going to take more than a few hours and if necessary, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will remain active after it's modified or deleted.
